The Little Family Connects With Stephen Baggett
There was another family of Littles here in Paulding County long before the family of Littles came here who are related to the Baggett Family. Francis Little (no relation to Baggett) was a very wealthy man. He had several sons and they were also wealthy. Francis Little made his will in 1856. He named in his will: Elijah Little, living in Arkansas; Sarah Favours Luther; Samuel Little; Francis M. Little; William Little; Hiram Little; and Mary Ann Pray. He appointed William Little of Walker County and Francis M. Little of Carroll County as executors of his will.
The family of John Little that is related to the Bagget Family came from North Carolina some time before 1850. James Little and Rosanna Tucker were John Little's parents. They died in Stanley County, North Carolina. Daniel Little, born in the early 1700s, was the father of James Little. Daniel Little and his wife, Annie Mary, lived in Rowan County, North Carolina. The family knows that Daniel was from Germany. They have linked him with Peter Klein, believed to be his brother. Daniel Little was born Daniel Klein. The surname Klein, in German, is translated in different ways into English. An early Lincoln County clerk and historian cites a striking instance in Lincoln County: "An old gentleman named Klein had great grandchildren who signed their names respectively: Peter Klein, Jacob Cline, John Small, George Little, and William Short."
Census records show Captain Daniel Little, Esquire, born 1731, died 1775, buried in Old English Cemetery, Salisbury, North Carolina, married Annie Mary ?. He was an Inn Keeper and Sheriff in Rowan County. They had seven children: Peter, born 1752; Daniel Little, Jr., born 1755; John, born 1758; Henry, born 1761; James, born 1767; Lewis, born 1770; and Mary Little, born 1772.
Their son James Little, 1767-1842, married Rosanna Tucker, 1773-1857; both are buried at Love's Grove in the Little Cemetery in Stanley County, North Carolina. They had ten children: Daniel Little, 1791-1869; George Singleton, born 1793; Elizabeth, born 1796; John, 1797-1863, married Rutha Honeycutt (Ellen Baggett's grandparents); James, 1798-1847; Aaron, 1800-1870; Mary (Polly), 1803-1863; Sophia Little; Jacob W. Little; and Labon Little, born 1808.
Their son John, 1797-1863, married Rutha Honeycutt, 1798-1873; both buried Little Cemetery, Paulding. They had thirteen children (fourteen if I. H. Little, born 1820, is a son of theirs): Zebulon B. Little, 1819-1905; Joseph P. Little, 1820-1899; Tilmon Calvin, 1821-1864; Singleton C. Little, 1823-1908; Mary (Polly) Caroline, born 1826; Elizabeth Adiline, born 1828; John Oliver, 1830-1883; James D. Little, born 1834; Ruth Perline, born 1836; Martha, born 1837; George B. Little, 1839-1863; Serena, born 1841; and Isaac Little, born 1845. John and Rutha Little, along with several children, are buried in the Little Cemetery on Land Lot 1110 in Paulding.
The 1840 Census, North Carolina: John Little, age 43; Rutha Little, age 42; Zebulal (Zebulon) B. Little, age 21; I. H. Little, age 20; J. O. Little, age 9; Elizabeth Little, age 5. Was I. H. Little a twin of Joseph P. Little? He is shown being born in North Carolina. John Little is probably the only son of James who came to Georgia.
The 1850 Census, 951st district, Paulding: Zebulon Little, age 31, farmer, personal worth $225; Caroline Little, age 27, housekeeper; Serena L. Little, age 9; John C. Little, age 7; Ruthy J. Little, age 4; Martha C. Little, age 1; all listed as born in North Carolina, but Martha was probably born in Georgia.
The 1860 Census, 839th district, Paulding: J. Little, age 64, farmer, real worth $300, personal worth $200, born NC; Ruth Little, age 63, housewife; Elizabeth, age 30; Ruth, age 23; Martha, age 23; George, age 22, day laborer; Serena, age 21; Isaac, age 15; George M. Little, age 7; all shown to be born in North Carolina, but apparently George M. Little was born in Georgia and was John Little's grandson.
The 1860 Census, 832th District: A. J. Little, farmer, age 30; Rhonda, age 30; James, age 14; John, age 10; Luke, age 4; all born in GA; may be Francis Little's relatives. This was another set of Littles in Paulding.
The 1860 Census, 951st District: I. H. Little, age 40, real $400, personal $75; Mary (May), age 37; Isaac, age 14, all born NC; Margaret, age 13; John, age 11; James, age 10; George, age 8; Anderson, age 5; Andrew, age 4; Jacob, age 3; Franklin, age 1; from Margaret down were born in GA. I. H. Little came with John Little to Georgia.
The 1860 Census, 839th District: J. O. Little, farmer, age 29, born NC; Amanda, age 24, born AL; Benola D. Little, male age 4; Albert B. Little, age 2; children are shown born in GA.
The 1870 Census, 19th District, Paulding: Rutha Little, age 72, head of household as housekeeper; Elizabeth Little, age 35; Rutha Little, age 30; Sarah (Serena) Little, age 27; Marion Little, age 17. Apparently Marion (George M. Little) was a grandson.
1870 census, 19th district, Paulding: Zebulal Little, age 51, farmer, real worth $600, personal worth $300; Tusley Little, age 47, housekeeper; Sarah Little, age 16; James Little, age 14, listed as farm laborer; Ellen Little (married Stephen Baggett), age 11; William Little, age 9; Alexander Little, age 7; Christine Little, age 4.
John and Rutha Little's son, Tilman Calvin Little, born 22 April 1821, moved back to Stanley County, NC. He died while in Civil War 27 November 1864. The history of Tilman Calvin, Singleton C. Little, Mary C. Little, John O. Little, James D. Little, George B. Little, and Isaac A. Little was shown in written letters from Paulding County.
Their son, Singleton C. Little, born 5 January 1823, moved back to Stanley County, NC, died 2 November 1908. His family has the family letters written by John and Zebulon Little from Paulding County.
Their daughter, Mary (Polly Caroline) Little, married Richard Hardin. He was wounded and lost right arm at shoulder during Civil War; was living in Floyd County, GA, July of 1880; was living near Rome in 1888.
Their son, John Oliver Little, born 7 August 1830, moved about 1861 to Pittsburg, TX; moved to Jefferson, TX in 1862; moved to LaFayette County, Ark. in 1866 and died there 29 December 1883.
Their son, James D. Little, born 1834, lived in Pittsburg, TX in 1871; lived in Silver City, NM in 1880; lived in El Paso, TX by 7 March 1882. He died there in April of 1883.
Their son, George B. Little, born 1839, joined the Confederate Army as Private in 1861. He was captured by the Union Army at Greencastle, PA 26 July 1863. He died of typhoid in Hammond U.S.A. General Hospital at Lookout, MD 15 November 1863.
Their son, Isaac A. Little, born 1845, left on Friday, 15 August 1862 to join the 7th Georgia Regiment, c/o Captain Leak near Richmond, VA. He is presumed to have died there during the Civil War.
John and Rutha Little's son, Zebulon Little, and his wife, Tesley Caroline Kluttz Little, had eleven children: Lenna L. Little, born 1841; John Calvin Little, born 1843; Ruthy J. Little, born 1846; Martha C. Little, born 1849; Mary Caroline Little, born 1850; Sara E. Little, born 1854; James Singleton Little, born 1856; Ellen Elgyrine Little, born 1859; William Zebulon (Bud) Little, 1861-1899; Silas Alexander Little, born 1863; and Christine Little, born 1866.
The family of Littles related to the Baggett Family first settled in the 2nd district and 3rd section of Paulding. Deed book K, page 53: A. J. Abney to John Little and C. L. Jenkins lot 36 in 2-3, 23 November 1854. Deed book I, page 172: John Little bought Land Lot 935 in 3-2 from James Ware for $40 in 1855. Deed book I, page 311: Zebulon to Jacob Fuller lot 1221 in 2-3, Paulding, for $275, 10 January 1851. Deed book N: Singleton C. Little bought lot 863 in 2-3 from Peter Saunders for $200 on 17 January 1848. Pumpkinvine Bridge on Hwy. 120 is on this lot. At this time the family left the 2nd district and moved to the 19th district in Paulding County.
The lot where the John Little family lived in the 19th district, 3rd section was where Ralph Campbell lived when he died. This Land Lot 1110 in 19-3 was drawn in the Gold Lottery in 1832 by S. C. Canalar for George Merchs, Sr. John and Rutha Little purchased the land from Merchs. In this deed it shows Land Lot 110, but this was a mistake. It should have read Land Lot 1110. Apparently they sold this lot, since they are shown repurchasing the same lot from P. P. Allgood in 1854.
Rutha was John Little's widow in 1870. The family is shown in the 1860 census with John, but letters show he died in 1863. She is shown in the 1870 census living on Land Lot 1110. No records have been found showing who owned this lot after most of the family were buried there. Zebulon Little owned Land Lots 1173, 1067, 1137, 1104, and 1103 in the 19 the district, 3rd section in Paulding County in 1879. No records have been found showing him owning lot 1110 in later years, but he apparently bought it before he died and sold it to Homer Baggett.
It seems that Zebulon's father almost lost their home place once at public outcry, but Zebulon bought it as the highest bidder. They must have all lived on Land Lot 1110. This lot goes just a little across Mud Creek. On 2 December 1854 P. P. Allgood sold to John Little lot 1110 in 19-3 Paulding for $174. Deed Book L, page 183: Suit against John Little by C. C. Bossmun; sold at public outcry, highest bidder for $130 lot 1110 in 19-3 on 3 June 1856 to Z. B. Little by the present Sheriff.
In Deed Book O, Page 332: Z. B. Little bought lot 1067 in 19-3 for $40 on 16 December 1871. This is the lot where Levi Duncan and West Cohran lived. Deed book M, page 197: John O. Little bought lot 1137 in 19-3 by public outcry for $15 on 7 December 1858.
In Deed Book M, Page 299: John Oliver Little bought lot 1104 by public outcry for $10 on 23 August 1859. Deed book N, page 373: He sold it to Zebulon for $75 on 16 October 1861. Deed book N: Zebulon sold lots 1103 and 1104 for $300 to Alsey Compton on 27 September 1862. Deed book Q, pages 330-1: Zebulon Little bought lot 1173 for $120 on 4 December 1879 from James L. Hight.
In Deed Book Z, Page 279: On 24 January 1866 Zebulon Little bought back these lots 1103 and 1104, plus lot 1137 for $400 in 19-3 from James Townsend. Apparently lot 1137 is where Zebulon and his wife Tesley lived most of their life in Paulding.
In Deed Book V, Page 5: James (Jim) Singleton Little, son of Zebulon, bought from C. C. Embry Land Lots 1034 and 1035 for $104 on 25 February 1892. Deed book Y, page 314: James S. Little to Wm. C. Embry lots 1066 and 1067 in 19-3, except 5 acres reserved for church (Union Primitive Baptist Church) purposes on 8 February 1902. Silas A. Little, son of Zebulon, and wife A. H. Little, has an infant, Ora P. Little, born/died 17 March 1890, buried at Union cemetery.
James Singleton Little was born in Paulding County 15 July 1856 (the same year as Steve Baggett), died 23 June 1931, married [first] Mary S. Embry, born 8 August 1860, died 22 May 1915; married [second] Mary Exea Neal, born 22 March 1888, died 17 November 1947; all are buried at Rockmart City Cemetery, lot number 196. Jim paid $10 for the lot in 1915. Exea Neal, Jim Little's last wife, was somehow related to Clara Bell Cohran.
Clara Bell had Jim Little's old Bible and other material. The old Bible, about one-half of it was gone, so it was thrown away. Jim was a Blacksmith. One of his invoices shows that he lived in Rockmart at the time. The heading: "In Account With, J. S. LITTLE, General Blacksmithing, All Kinds of Repair Work, Horse Shewing a Specialty." At the top of the invoice, it shows Rockmart, Georgia.
Jim and Mary (Embry) Little has a daughter buried in the Villa Rica City Cemetery. At the time she died, they lived at Villa Rica. She has a beautiful tombstone with an angel holding roses in his left hand and his right hand reaching out. Engraved on her tombstone: Ida M. Little, daughter of James S. and Mary S. Little, born 22 may 1882, died 10 April 1902. The angel was once broken in half, but it has been repaired.
Joe Clark Little, son of Jim and Mary Embry Little, married Maud Anderson; they had three sons and three daughters. He moved to Atlanta in 1898 after marrying Maud Anderson in 1896 and became involved in the city's political affairs. He was an ex-councilman and at the time of his death was employed by the city as Tax Collector. His obituary was in one of the Atlanta Newpapers. One of their daughters is shown: Iva Mae Little, "attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Little, of 22 Berne Street," showing her picture in the newspaper.
Silas Alexander (Elec) Little, Jim Little's brother, migrated to Texas, as stated by Bennett Bullock who lived in the community. He may have moved near one of his father's brothers there. William, whom they called Bud and is buried at Union, had seizures or fits of some kind that almost drove him insane. Bud was going around to people's houses in the community (everybody had wells back then) and cut the ropes and let the buckets go down into the wells. This became a nuisance to everyone, but the seizures drove him to do these things. He probably had epilepsy. His illness is described in letters to Zebulon's brothers living in North Carolina.
Joseph P. Little, son of John and Rutha, born 28 February 1820, died 4 August 1899, married Polly ?, born 11 October 1823, died 31 May 1891. Joseph P. Little lived somewhere around Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Their children: Isaac W. Little, born 9 March 1846, died 6 March 1916; Margaret K. Little, born 2 June 1848, died 18 June 1896; James E. Little, born 7 February 1850, died 11 June 1920; George W. Little, born 30 April 1851, died 18 December 1922; Andrew Jackson Little, born 1 October 1852, died 7 May 1919; A. A. Little, born 21 October 1854, died 3 September 1909; Jacob A. Little, born 25 November 1856, died 24 May 1892. Joseph and his wife, along with several of their children, are buried at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Ephriam Tilman Little, born 4 September 1863, died 10 June 1917, was the youngest of the children of Joseph P. Little and his wife Polly. Ephriam apparently married [first] Ella Henson; married [second] E. L. Mobley, born 24 February 1880; they had several children.
In Deed Book Z, page 159: 20 October 1899, James L. Hight to J. W. Little, James E. Little, George W. Little, Andrew J. Little, Jacob A. Little, A. A. little, and Ephriam T. Little, heirs of Joseph P. Little, deceased, lots 951 and 952 in 2nd district, 3rd section of Paulding for $275; said land made to comply with a Bond given to J. P. Little on 14 October 1880. Witnessed by Z. B. Little, J. P.
In Deed Book Z, page 143: 20 October 1899, Andrew J. Little, one of the heirs of Joseph P. Little, deceased, to J. W. Little, James E. Little, George W. Little, Andrew J. Little, A. A. Little, and Ephriam T. Little for $100, lots 881, 919, 920, 921, 951, and 952 in 2nd district, 3rd section of Paulding for his interest in land. Witnessed by Z. B. Little, J. P.
Andrew J. Little, George W. Little, and James E. Little, three of the sons of Joseph P. Little, all worded their wills the same, as follows: (Item 1): I desire that all my debts be paid in full. (Item 2): I will that the children of my deceased brother Ephriam T. Little, six minor children now living, share equally at my death one-fourth of undivided interests as share, in lots 919, 920, 921, 951, and 952. I will that the following children share equally in both real and personal property: Joseph O. Little, Rilla O. F. Little, Elbert W. Little, Alice R. Little, Caley B. Little, and Jesse W. Little, this the 5th day of July, 1917.
The three brothers owned equal interests in the five lots of land listed above. These three exact wills recorded and signed on 5 July 1917 by Andrew J. Little, George W. Little, and James E. Little are found in the wills and deeds records of Paulding County.
Apparently what prompted the three above to make these wills, is that Ephriam had died the month before. Their brother, Jacob A. Little, had died before their father died. Their sister, Margaret Little, who probably never married, was deceased at the time these wills were made. Since these three didn't leave anything to descendants of the other four brothers or their sister, it makes you wonder of Ephriam T. Little was the only one that had children. One has to conclude that many of the children of Joseph Little were never married, and those who did marry may not have had children.
Elbert Westley, Joseph Oscar, and Jesse Winston Little were sons of Ephriam Tilman Little, son of Joseph P. Little. Joseph P. Little's grandson, Westley Little, said that the Littles in the Union Community were related to his family in the Mt. Zion Community. Westley said his grandfather and someone in the Union community were brothers, according to what Joe and Steve Baggett had told him. They had stopped and talked with him one day while they were passing.
Elbert Westley Little, son of Ephriam Little, was born 22 October 1902 and died 2 December 1980. He married Ovelie Fuller. She died 20 October 1957. They are buried at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery. They were survived by one son: Ottis Little.
Oscar Little, son of Ephriam Little, made a will in Paulding County. According to his will, he was reasonably wealthy. He was a Baptist Preacher and was Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church at one time, and he was once Pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in the City of Douglasville. He had a son, Fred Little, who was Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church for several years.
