Descendant of John Baggett Of Surry County Virginia

Generation No. 1

1. AVERETT "AVERY" BAGGETT  (ABRAHAM II5, ABRAHAM4, NICHOLAS II3, NICHOLAS2, JOHN1) was born Bef. 1765 in probably  Wayne County, North Carolina, and died Bet. 1810 - 1820 in probably  Moore County, North Carolina.  He married ELIZABETH JORDIN Abt. 1785 in Wayne County, North Carolina.  She was born Bef. 1770 in probably Wayne County, North Carolina.

Notes for AVERETT "AVERY" BAGGETT:
Conjectural, but probable father of Micajah.
Avery Baggett appears in the 1790 Wayne County census as Avery Baggot, with a son of the right age to be Micajah.

Also of interest in the 1790 census is a Jesse Avorett and a John Avorett.  These names are of interest as it shows Averet/Avorett to be a family name.  At some time, there may have been a family connection to the Baggetts that resulted in Averett/Avery Baggett's given name.  Another family shown in the 1790 census is the Packer family. This family is of interest because members of the Packer family signed a legal document that has Avery's name on it, and there is a Micajah Packer in the 1790 census.  Could Avery have named his son Micajah after Micajah Packer?

1790 WAYNE COUNTY CENSUS, Column 1, of Ancestry.com Image #3
1 male 16 years and upwards
1 male under 16
5 females.

In the 1810 Moore County NC census, Avery is shown with a son, 16-26, the right age to be Micajah Baggett, born 1790.  Avery is shown six households above John Thomas who has a daughter 10-16, the right age to be Catherine Thomas, Micajah's future wife.

It is conjectural that these are the young couple, Micajah and Catherine, shown in the 1820 census, but as the Avery Baggett household is close by the John Thomas household in the 1810 census and Micajah Baggett is living adjacent to John Thomas in the 1820 census, the evidence for a family connection is strong.  The daughter of John Thomas of the 1810 census is not shown to be in his household in the 1820 census, but a woman of the correct age to be the Thomas daughter, is shown in the 1820 census as Micajah's wife.

In the 1820 census, Avery is no longer shown and is presumed dead.
1810 MOORE COUNTY, NC Census, Ancestry.com Image #23  (Researcher's interpretations are in parentheses.)

Avery Baggett household:
1 male 16-26  (Micajah, age 20)
1 male 45 and older  (Avery)
1 female
John Thomas household
3 males 0 - 10
1 male 10-16 (William age 54 in 1850.)
1 male 26-45
1 female 0-10
1 female 10-16 (Catherine, about 16)
1 female 26-45

The 1820 census is said by Ancestry.com to have the same age categories as the 1810 census, but in this case, the age category numbers for males are incorrectly handwritten as follows:  for males 10, 16, 18, 26, 45, 45, and for females the categories are 10, 16, 26, 45, 45 (the same as in the 1810 census.)  The extra male category of 18, makes it difficult to compare the males in the two censuses, but as the 18 category is not supposed to be there, it should read as follows.

1820 MOORE COUNTY, NC Census, Ancestry.com Image #6  (interpreted)

Micajah Baggett household
1 male 0-10  (John Gaston, less than one year)
1 male 26-45  (Micajah, age 30)
1 female 0-10 (Elizabeth, age 1)
1 female 26-45 (Catherine, age 26)

John Thomas household, adjacent to Micajah
2 males 0-10
2 males 10-16
1 male 26-45, or 45 and older  (John)
1 female 0-10
1 female 10-16
1 female 26-45 (Note: if Catherine were still in the household, there would be 2 females here.)

Notes for ELIZABETH JORDIN:
Conjectural wife of Avery/Averett Baggett.

The 1790 census of Wayne County shows a William Jourdin and an Abraham Jourdin. Their connection to Elizabeth is unknown at this time.

The following deed appears to indicate that a marital connection is soon to be established.  The 1785 marriage date has been ascertained from this document.

"Book Page 71, Deed Book 3, Page 52
Elizabeth Jordan I, a lease to her daughter, Elizabeth Jordan II, 14 February 1785, for one shilling specie a tract of land whereon Avery Baget now lives, during the lifetime of the first mentioned Elizabeth Jordan.  Witness: Arthur Williams and Thomas Reson."  This deed is shown elsewhere on the Baggett History site.

Children of AVERETT BAGGETT and ELIZABETH JORDIN are:

 i. MICAJAH BAGGETT, b. 1790, probably  Wayne County, North Carolina; d. Aft. 1860, Chattahoochee County, Georgia.
 ii. FEMALE BAGGETT, b. Abt. 1794; d. Bet. 1835 - 1840.
Generation No. 2

2.  MICAJAH BAGGETT (AVERETT "AVERY"6, ABRAHAM II5, ABRAHAM4, NICHOLAS II3, NICHOLAS2, JOHN1) was born 1790 in Wayne County, North Carolina, and died Aft. 1860 in Chattahoochee County, Georgia.  He married CATHERINE THOMAS Abt. 1818 in probably Moore County, North Carolina, daughter of JOHN THOMAS.  She was born Abt. 1794 in probably Moore County, North Carolina, and died Aft. 1880.

Notes for MICAJAH BAGGETT:
Micajah served in the War of 1812.
A 1788 deed to Averett Bagget,  plus the 1790 Wayne County Census, place Micajah Baggett's birthplace as being in Wayne County, North Carolina. (The 1788 deed can be found elsewhere on the Baggett History site.)

1830 MOORE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA CENSUS, Image #1, Ancestry.com (interpreted)

Mecager Bagotte family
1 male under 5 (Thomas Wesley)
3 males 5 and under 10 (John Gaston, Andrew Jackson, James Micajah)
1 male 30 and under 40 (Micajah)
2 females 10 and under 15 (Celia and Ann)
1 female 10 and under 15 (Elizabeth)
1 female 30 and under 40 (Catherine)

Adjacent to Mecager Baggett:
John Thomas family
1 male 10 and under 16
1 male 15 and under 20
1 male 20 and under 30
1 male 50 and under 60
1 female 50 and under 60

Three households above McCager Baggett is the William Thomas family.  William Thomas is also shown in the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses in close proximity to Catherine.  He is a conjectural relative of Catherine, possibly her brother, and as such, his household is presented here and in later census data.

William Thomas family
2 males 0 to under 5
2 males 5 to under 10
1 male 30 to under 40
1 females  5 to under 10 (possibly Sarah Thomas, age 57 in the 1880 Census)
1 female 30 to under 40

Notes for CATHERINE THOMAS:
The census records present a very curious puzzle as to Catherine's age and birth year.  She is presented as 47 in 1850, which would make her birth year about 1803; as 62 in 1860, which would make her birth year about 1798; as 75 in 1870, birth year about 1795; and 86 in 1880, birth year about 1794.  In spite of these discrepancies, she is clearly recognizable by the family members around her.  This researcher believes that she was born about 1794.  This is compatible with the 1810, 1820, 1870, and 1880 censuses.

Notes for JOHN GASTON BAGGETT:
John Gaston Baggett was with General Lee's Army, and was taken prisoner.  He had to sign a statement saying that he would never take up arms against the United States again and was then free to go home. After having most of his children in Chattahoochee County, Georgia, he moved, sometime after 1870, to San Augustine County, Texas.  John Gaston Baggett was one of the first to be buried in Antioch Cemetery, San Augustine County, Texas. His marker and his wife's marker are there.  There is a plaque designating the cemetery as a historical site.  The plaque names John Gaston as one of the first to be buried there and also names Elder Thomas M. Baggett, to whom the land was deeded in 1880.  Elder Baggett is probably Thomas McCager Baggett, grandson of John Gaston Baggett. The cemetery was originally the burying ground for the Antioch Church of Christ, organized in 1836.
